Gretsch Drums was first founded in 1883 in Brooklyn, New York when a German immigrant by the name of Friedrich Gretsch opened a musical instrument business. Gretsch has been a growing business ever since it was first created and ownership has stayed in the Gretsch family for four generations. One event that accelerated growth for the Gretsch company came in the late 1980s when Gretsch bought the Slingerland Drum company. They later sold the rights to Gibson, but kept the rights to the Leedy brand. Today, Gretsch has its headquarters in Ridgeland, South Cariolina which is also where they manufacture their professional quality drum sets. The other less expensive drum series are imported from other manufacturing plants in Asia.
One reason that the Gretsch name has been becoming more prominent in the drum industry is because Fred Gretsch has been recruiting many drummers to promote Gretsch drum sets while they tour. Since 2002 over 200 drummers have been signed as sponsors for Gretsch drum sets including Taylor Hawkins from the Foo Fighters, Brad Wilk from Audioslave and Rage Against the Machine, Phil Collins, and Rob Bourdon from Linkin Park. Gretsch currently offers a variety of drum sets, ranging from beginner to professional quality kits. Their beginner sets are the Blackhawk series. Gretsch’s intermediate offerings include the Catalina Club series, Catalina Ash, and Catalina Maple drum sets. Their professional quality drum sets are the Renown Maple, New Classic, and their flagship model, the USA Custom.
