Ludwig Drums was founded in 1910 by Theo and William Ludwig. They started out by making a bass drum pedal that was able to produce faster rhythms than the competition. They then expanded into drums and banjo-type instruments. Ludwig drum sets gained popularity in the 1960s when the drummer of the Beatles, Ringo Starr, displayed the Ludwig logo on his bass drum above the Beatles’ logo. Since Ringo, there have been many prominent musicians to proudly use Ludwig drum sets. Some examples include John Bonham from Led Zeppelin, Keith Moon from the Who, Nick Mason of Pink Floyd, Neil Peart from Rush, Eric Carr from KISS and Charlie Watts from the Rolling Stones.
Today Ludwig drum sets and timpani are made in Monroe, North Carolina while their mallet instruments are produced in LaGrange, Illinois. Ludwig drums has always been known for innovations in drum construction. Many of their vintage sets are well sought after by collectors and current players. They offer over 12 series of drum sets in their 2009 lineup, along with a variety of specialty metallic snare drums.
