
Meinl is one of the largest cymbal manufacturers in the world today. Based in Gutenstetten, Germany, the parent company is Meinl Percussion which also produces other percussion instruments besides cymbals. Along with Paiste, Meinl cymbals were first based on a European sound, with Turkish roots as opposed Chinese cymbal making tradition. The European sound has more focused consistency and penetration when compared to the more traditional Chinese based cymbals.
Meinl currently offers a variety of different types of cymbals, ranging from beginner to professional level. Their entry level cymbals are the HCS and MCS series. The HCS are the least expensive products Meinl manufactures are are made with a MS63 brass alloy. Meinl’s intermediate offering is the Classics line of cymbals which are made from the B8 Bronze alloy. The Mb8 series is a professional quality set of cymbals with a bright cutting sound made from the B8 Bronze alloy. Two other professional quality series produces by Meinl are the Mb10 and Mb20 series which utilize an alloy of 90% copper – 10% tin and 80% copper – 20% respectfully. The Mb10 series has a cutting yet warm sound while the Mb20 series is designed specifically for louder music.
