Paiste is one of the largest cymbal and gong manufacturers in the world today. The company was founded in 1906 by Estonian musician Toomas Paiste. Toomas had an instrument repair shop in Saint Petersburg, Russia where he started to take orders and make cymbals for his customers. Over time, cymbal making became the main objective of the Paiste company and eventually Paiste started shipping out cymbals internationally. Due to war, the Paiste family was forced to relocate their manufacturing facilities numerous times throughout the years. In 1917 they moved to Tallinn in Estonia. They moved again in 1940 to Poland and then to Germany in 1945. These were harsh times for the Paiste company but even with unfortunate circumstances Paiste continued to grow and further its cymbal making operations.
In 1957 Paiste expanded and built a new headquarters and production facility in Switzerland. They kept the facilities in Germany and continue to operate today from these two locations. Paiste has been one of the innovators in cymbal design and manufacturing methods. Some of these new ideas Paiste developed include the Sound Edge Hi-Hat in 1967 in which the bottom cymbal of the hi-hat pair has ripples along the edge to prevent airlock and first colored cymbals in 1983. Paiste currently produces a variety of different cymbal series and alloys along with other items such as hand cymbals, gongs, finger cymbals, and other metal percussion instruments.
