Paiste is one of the largest cymbal and gong manufacturers in the world today. The company was founded in 1906 by Estonian musician Toomas Paiste. Originally, Toomas owned an instrument repair shop in Russia but when an increasing amount of his customers requested he build cymbals for them, Toomas decided to make cymbal making his primary business. The Paiste cymbal company now runs operations out of facilities in both Switzerland and Germany. Paiste currently produces a variety of different cymbal series and alloys along with other items such as hand cymbals, gongs, finger cymbals, and other metal percussion instruments.
The ride cymbal is the second most important time keeper of the cymbal types, with the hi-hat being the first. It is typically the largest cymbal in a drummers setup and has a nice open sound. Ride cymbals range from 18″-24″, with 20″ or 22″ being the most popular sizes. A ride cymbal typically has a larger bell (the raised center) than other types of cymbals which when struck allows for pronounced accents within a rhythm. Ride cymbals vary in thickness, which has an influence on attack, volume, and tone of the sound. For instance, a thicker ride produces a louder and sharper sound, so it would be better suited for rock or metal while a thinner cymbal may be more better suited for jazz.
