tama drum sets

Tama drum sets are produced in Seto, Japan and Guangzhou, China by the Japanese musical instrument company, Hoshino Gakki. Tama has been making drum sets since 1965 under their original name, Star Drums. Early on, Tama focused on hardware and was one of the first drum manufactures to produce extra heavy duty hardware for drum and cymbal mounts. Tama Drums also invented the Octobans, small 6 inch wide drums that vary in length instead of width to change the pitch. These unique drums have been used by noteworthy artists such as Stewart Copeland of the Police and Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater.

Tama offers both beginner/intermediate level kits and professional quality drum sets. The lower level drum sets and all hardware are produced in China. This includes the Superstar and Imperialstar series, which are manufactured with birch/basswood and poplar shells. The professional quality Tama drum sets, named the Starclassic, are produced in Japan. These top of the line drum sets are available in specialty wood and finishes such as bubinga and maple shells.
