Zildjian cymbals are manufactured by the Avedia Zildjian Company, the oldest family-run company in the United States and of the 300 oldest companies in the world today. Avedis Zildjian started making metal noise makers during the Ottoman empire to frighten enemy warriors, almost 400 years ago. Zildjian was the name given to the founder, which literally meant cymbal maker in Turkish. By the 19th century, Zildjian was no longer just making sheets of metal to make noise, but was now producing finely crafted cymbals for use as musical instruments.
In 1908, the family owner of the time Avedis Zildjian III moved from Turkey to Boston Massachusetts. He created a shop in Quincy MA and started to develop the first cymbals for use with drum sets. Zildjian was the first company to name the different types of cymbals used with drums, such as ride, crash, splash, and hihat. In the 1960s Zildjian developed the manufacturing process of stamping cymbals out of sheet metal. This allowed cymbals to be cheaply and quickly mass produced.
Zildjian cymbals are still being made today by the same family it has been for 14 generations. In 2008, Zildjian created the first all black cymbals known as the Zildjian Pitch Black Series. The Avedia Zildjian Company is currently located in Nowell Massachusetts and also manufactures drum sticks and other accessories.
