Zildjian cymbals are manufactured by the Avedia Zildjian Company, the oldest family-run company in the United States and of the 300 oldest companies in the world today. Zildjian was first formed almost 400 years ago during the Ottoman Empire when they produced the first cymbals, crude metal noise making devices used to scare enemies. In 1908 Zildjian moved from Turkey to the United States in Boston, Massachusetts. At this new shop in Quincy MA Zildjian started to develop the first cymbals for use with drum sets. Since they had never been made before, Zildjian was the first company to name the different types of cymbals used with drums, such as ride, crash, splash, and hi hat. Zildjian cymbals are still being made today along with drum sticks and other accessories by the same family it has been for 14 generations.
A china cymbal is a specialized type of crash cymbal with a raw “oriental” sound. The china cymbal is often used like a splash cymbal to accent a snare or tom drum or used within a rhythm to accent a ride pattern. They can be found in sizes ranging from 12″ – 22″. Chinas have the most unique shape of the cymbal types. Specifically, the outer edge is turned up to aid in its signature “trashy” sound. The tone is bright and cuts through the mix very well. A china cymbal is best used sparingly and a drummer should be cautious of over use of such a strong sound in their grooves.
