Zildjian cymbals are manufactured by the Avedia Zildjian Company, the oldest family-run company in the United States and of the 300 oldest companies in the world today. Zildjian was first formed almost 400 years ago during the Ottoman Empire when they produced the first cymbals, crude metal noise making devices used to scare enemies. In 1908 Zildjian moved from Turkey to the United States in Boston, Massachusetts. At this new shop in Quincy MA Zildjian started to develop the first cymbals for use with drum sets. Since they had never been made before, Zildjian was the first company to name the different types of cymbals used with drums, such as ride, crash, splash, and hi hat. Zildjian cymbals are still being made today along with drum sticks and other accessories by the same family it has been for 14 generations.
Crash cymbals are the traditional type of cymbals first played. They are designed to accent a rhythm. Most of the time the bass drum is often struck at the same time as the crash to provide more body to the sound and create a wide range of frequencies. Crash cymbals range in size from 14″ – 19″ and vary in thickness from razor thin to fat. The heavier and larger diameter crashes are actually more like hybrids between rides and crash cymbals. These crash/ride cymbals have larger bells and can be struck on the edge like a crash or played on top like a ride.
