Zildjian cymbals are manufactured by the Avedia Zildjian Company, the oldest family-run company in the United States and of the 300 oldest companies in the world today. Zildjian was first formed almost 400 years ago during the Ottoman Empire when they produced the first cymbals, crude metal noise making devices used to scare enemies. In 1908 Zildjian moved from Turkey to the United States in Boston, Massachusetts. At this new shop in Quincy MA Zildjian started to develop the first cymbals for use with drum sets. Since they had never been made before, Zildjian was the first company to name the different types of cymbals used with drums, such as ride, crash, splash, and hi hat. Zildjian cymbals are still being made today along with drum sticks and other accessories by the same family it has been for 14 generations.
The hi-hat is the most often used type of cymbal. It is actually a pair of cymbals that are mounted together on a special stand. The bottom cymbal remains stationary on the stand while the top cymbal is attached to a movable rod. The rod is controlled via a foot pedal and this allows the cymbals to open (spread apart) or closed when touching. The amount of space between the hi-hat cymbals and the tension applied to the foot pedal when closed allows the hi-hat to produce a variety of sounds. Typical sizes for a hi-hat are 13″-14″. Most are bought and sold as pairs to ensure the top and bottom create a good sound together. Since hi-hats are the most used cymbal in most types of music, most drummers prefer a high quality pair of hi-hats for increased durability.
